L’importance des références opérationnelles en situation de conception : quelques leçons pour l’enseignement du projet urbain

Abstract : When working on urban development projects, actors tend to look, cite, use, study, and even, visit, other urban development projects to make design decisions. By comparing four design situations where actors are asked to design a master plan, this paper shines a light on the way actors use knowledges from other development projects to make design decisions. The empirical data gathered through observation methods reveals that precedents are structuring for the design process of urban development projects, and that it is mainly through design situations that actors develop their knowledge of precedent urban development project. These results are discussed in regards to planning education and reveal the importance of emphasizing the pedagogy of training by doing in the planning curriculum.
