Du canotage à la course à l'aviron. Sportivisation du nautisme en France (1853-1914)

Abstract : In France, as early as the beginning of the 19thcentury, river boating stimulated the creation of societies and the organization of regattas. First perceived as a leisure activity, rowing soon turned into a sport, but without developing an adequate institution to give it shape. The purpose of this historical analysis is to highlight the inner workings of the sportification process of rowing. Thus, the transition between fun boating and boat rowing contests was marked by various steps: the introduction of new concepts in boat building in which speed became a major issue, the standardization of rules, and the proliferation of competitions. All these factors depict and characterize the growth of rowing as a sport. In 1853 the first definition of a shared contest code appeared, valued by the institutional role taken over by the Society of Parisian Regattas. In 1882, the Union of the rowing societies of France was created. It then gradually developed until the Federation of the rowing societies of France was founded in 1893. The transformations that these institutions underwent until the beginning of the 1st World War give us a glimpse of how much resistance must have arisen against the globalization of the rules. This can be observed through a) the complex relationships between the various national and then international federal players; b) the conflicts around the definition of amateurism; and c) the intricate standardization of a contest code. Expounding this process offers a tangible example of the sportification process of water sports. This presentation is supported by texts from periodicals like Le Yacht and L’Aviron, as well as from specialized monographs.
