L'un- et le multiple : la préfixation négative en anglais contemporain

Abstract : The prefix un- is very frequent, multifaceted and is still productive nowadays. It forms contraries and contradictories in the case of adjectives, and it conveys the values of reversativity, privativity and ablativity with verbs. It has a redundant use as well. After Funk (1990) and Horn (1988), this paper analyses the unity of the prefix: how does a single prefix perform those various functions? To what extent can it be said to be one single prefix? This contribution focuses on verbs and aims to demonstrate that the processes designated by the verbs formed by un- belong to the same semantic areas, and that this semantic component is what distinguishes un- from other prefixes, such as de- and dis-, which are apparently synonymous.
