Les limites de la requalification des espaces publics dans une périphérie métropolitaine stigmatisée : le quartier barcelonais de la Mina.

Abstract : Renewal of public spaces in working-class neighbourhoods is an issue that constitutes a research gap in urban studies focused on urban regeneration projects of peripheral areas in European metropolis. The goal of this article is twofold: to analyse whether these interventions improve the quality of public spaces for all residents; and to verify if they contribute to solving the socio-spatial and concentration problems of illicit and undesirable activities in highly stigmatized neighbourhoods. Based on a critical approach and the use of qualitative methods, this article focuses on an archetypal working-class neighbourhood of the last quarter of the 20th century located in the first belt of the metropolitan area of Barcelona: La Mina. The analysis of the design of public and collective spaces and their reception by residents explains, first, the limits of urban interventions in terms of improving urban vitality, and second, the persistence of forms of segregation and stigmatization.
