Explorer les réseaux mondiaux : proposition d'outil interactif combinant graphe (diagramme nœuds-liens) et carte de flux

Abstract : The visualisation of relations, exchanges, flows or traffic, constitutes a classical problem for spatial representation. Innovative ways of displaying data, in this case graphical web tools, allow us to explore new technical possibilities and to assess their interest. In this paper, we would like to propose a way to combine two visualisation techniques, complementary but often mutually exclusive: the network graph (node-link diagram) and the flow map. Indeed, a graph focuses on the structure, the organisation of the relations between nodes of the network (centrality, connectivity), albeit at the expense of the geography (localisation, distances). A flow map serve the inverse principle. Our paper will be based on two previous research datasets to uncover the advantages of the dual interactive visualisation we propose. The first dataset deals with the international waste trade and the second with scientific relations between cities (co-authorship and citation data).
