La condition juridique du juif converti dans le Traité sur les juifs de Giuseppe Sessa (1717)

Abstract : The Treaty on the Jews of G. Sessa (1717) provides an overview of the change in legal status entailed by baptism for the Jews of the State of Piedmont in the early 18th century. The standards outlined and discussed by the Turin lawyer are rooted in medieval and modern canon law; they concern the terms of conversion, financial affairs and the effects of conversion on family and property matters. They testify to mainstream society’s ambivalence towards converts as they were intended to encourage conversions but also impose an evaluation period on neophytes.
