Les attentes des éducateurs sur la scolarité des enfants placés : Une estimation des possibles a minima

Abstract : When children are in care, corporate parents have the responsibility of many strands in children’s lives, and education is one of the most important. English research pointed out the weakness of the care workers’ expectations for looked after children. These expectations have an impact on children’s education and school achievement. We present the findings of a comparative research between England and France about care workers’ expectations; we focus on those who work in residential units. We propose the findings from 61 face to face interviews with professional who look after 81 young people aged 8-17. This article highlights several elements which contribute to this low level of expectation; the professional’s estimation of the children’s ability is one of them. We identify the effect of these expectations: they contribute to the neglect of the school work and maintain the social and educational marginalization of looked after children.
