« Au milieu d’un million de sépulcres », l’écriture comme salut chez Jean de Léry

Abstract : The two works written by Jean de Léry, the Histoire mémorable de Sancerre and the Histoire d’un voyage en la terre de Brésil, are presented as eye-witness accounts. However, they are true literary works in which writing acts to transform being. The two works thus appear as « works of salvation, » according to the phrase used by Georges Gusdorf to describe autobiography. They reproduce the experience of survival that they depict and give this experience a spiritual and anthropological meaning that resonates profoundly with literature written by survivors of contemporary massacres.
